Welcome the the 2014 Sidewrite Short Screenplay Competition. A division of the Sidewalk Film Festival started in 2004, Sidewrite's mission is to discover and reward talented screenwriters in Alabama and around the world. The short screenplay competition aims to foster community amongst emerging writers and reinforce cinematic artistry locally. Sidewrite allows passionate writers to enhance their craft and receive recognition for their work and creativity.

MISSION & OBJECTIVE
Sidewalk is a celebration of new independent film in downtown Birmingham, Alabama. Our mission is to encourage, inspire and support filmmaking and the appreciation of independent cinema in Alabama.

ABOUT THE FESTIVAL
The Sidewalk Film Festival, consistently ranked among the coolest film festivals in the country, (listed by USA TODAY in 2013 as "One of the Top 10 Places for a Fabulous Film Festival), will celebrate it's 16th year, August 22-24, 2014. Since its debut in 1999, filmmakers from across the country and around the world have come to Birmingham to screen their work at Sidewalk and have been thrilled to discover packed houses, enthusiastic and adventurous crowds and the type of hospitality that only the south can extend.

After 15 years, Sidewalk has perfected its own personal trifecta-- hospitality, networking, and humility. Ask any of its previous guests and they'll rave about the rock star treatment they received from the moment they arrived in Birmingham. One aspect that many filmmakers consider the best thing about Sidewalk is that the festival places a HUGE emphasis on filmmaker attendance, and not for the sake of name-dropping. We like to mix filmmakers and their audiences up in an unusual town with unusual activities, forcing them to break out of their shells and really get to know one another, both in theaters and party venues like the famed Bottletree. From the Filmmakers' Reception and the Filmmakers' Retreat to a myriad of breakfasts, field trips, parties and galas, Sidewalk connects filmmakers. The atmosphere at Sidewalk is electric with creativity and collaboration as filmmakers and film-lovers mix and mingle between screenings, and participate in panel discussions. It's like summer camp for filmmakers and film lovers- without the sleeping bags.

Low-priced weekend passes provide easy access to Sidewalk venues, encouraging attendees to seek out new films and sample programming they may not otherwise see. To add to the spontaneity all of our venues, including the historic Alabama Theatre, are within just a few blocks of each other, and so it is easy to hop from one film to another in record time. The result of our affordable pricing and convenient locations is a crowd rich in diversity and united in a passion for new film.

Sidewalk offers more than $10,000 in CASH AWARDS.

Word on the Sidewalk:

“You start to get to know about the festivals that treat filmmakers well and the ones that don’t, and Sidewalk is one of the names that always came up as far as being great to filmmakers.” Joe Swanberg

"Seriously, you guys have some magic going on down there, and I will encourage everyone I know to check it out." Jay Duplass

"Often film festivals can actually be a lonely place for a filmmaker because you just don't know anyone, and sometimes they're all spread out and you don't have a car and you can barely get anywhere, and there aren't enough events set up for you to keep you busy or meet your fellow filmmakers and my goodness, Sidewalk just blew all that to the Cosmos! It was so friendly and fun and low key. I just felt astonishingly well taken care of." Alison Bagnall

"I've never been to a film festival that made me feel so sad to go home. I honestly felt as if I was returning home from summer camp and leaving all my new best friends behind. So to evoke such strong feelings you all must be doing something right and it sheds much truth on the term "southern hospitality" which Sidewalk Moving Picture Festival has so genuinely perfected!" Jason Connell

“Sidewalk has done such a good job of educating the city and the audience in independent films.” Barlow Jacobs
